On occasion, bankruptcy may not be your best option for various reasons. Perhaps, you only have one small debt that you just cannot seem to get a handle on. One lawsuit that can be potentially resolved and you don't want to go to court. Or maybe you just have a very temporary income problem. Maybe you do not qualify for bankruptcy at all. Or do not want to file for bankruptcy for whatever reason. Or possibly, you have filed for bankruptcy already and not enough time has passed for you to file again.

If you are struggling to resolve one or multiple debts, you may be able to work with your creditor(s) and even debt collectors to make things more manageable. This is called debt negotiation or debt settlement. For example, you might settle a debt by getting a creditor to accept one lump sum payment that is substantially lower than what you allegedly owe. Or perhaps you can negotiate lower payments, either permanently or temporarily.

Unfortunately, creditors and debt collectors sometimes do not take the time to understand your issue or acknowledge your legal rights in a respectful manner.
